ADASS XVII: The NOAO NVO Portal and the Web 2.0 (C. Miller)

Defining the Web 2.0.
  • "Web 2.0 is the network as a platform, spanning all connected devices" Tim O'Reilly
  • Web 2.0 applications are those that make the most of the intrinsic advantages of that platform: delivering software as a continually-updated services that gets better the more people use it
    • Google: change the software at will
    • Flickr: upload and metatag
    • Amazon.com, Ebay.com: small business ideas
    • del.icio.us, youtube, netscape: bring data to you, point you to data
    • facebook, myspace, pandora: do something with data that you have not done.
  • Web 2.0 goes beyond static web pages
The NOAO NVO Portal Features
  • Provides visual discovery to the VO imaging data
  • Provides non-proprietary and proprietary access:
    • VO data (public)
    • NOAO PI data
  • Ruby on Rails
  • Javascript
  • Postgres with pgSphere

VO Integration:
  • Portal Cached DB
    • SIA archives are "scaped"
    • CCD wireframes
  • VORuby (http://rybyforge.org/project/voruby)
    • Uniform access to VO resources
    • Ruby is not another scripting language... (REALLY?)
  • NOAO's Archive
The portal enhances the value of the data by providing added value to it! (Is this just adding metadata tags to current data? cool)
