Image Resizing: the RIGHT way

From Slashdot I read tha "at the SIGGRAPH 2007 conference in San Diego, two Israeli professors, Shai Avidan and Ariel Shamir, have demonstrated a new method to shrink images. " The method is called 'Seam Carving for Content-Aware Image Resizing' and uses an algorithm to figures out which parts of an image are less significant.

Can this be used in ANY way with astronomical images? And if so why? I am not sure, but this is really a cool way to remove data while preserving the most information...
